TECC for Lay Responders (TECC-LR) Course
Course Description:
In today's world, immediate responders are often the everyday citizens present when tragedy strikes. This Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course, recognized by the Committee for TECC (C-TECC), empowers lay responders with the critical, life-saving skills needed to act effectively during traumatic events like active violence incidents or mass casualty accidents before professional help can arrive.
Adapted from proven military medical principles (TCCC) for the civilian context, TECC focuses on simple, high-impact interventions that address the most common causes of preventable death in these situations. Led by instructors with deep expertise in tactical medicine and emergency response, this course provides practical, hands-on training in a supportive environment, building confidence and competence to make a difference.
Key Learning Objectives and Skills:
Situational Awareness & Safety: Understanding basic principles of scene safety in dynamic events (e.g., Run, Hide, Fight concepts) and how to ensure your own safety before attempting to help others.
Massive Bleeding Control (Primary Focus):
Rapidly identifying life-threatening external hemorrhage ("Stop the Bleed" principles).
Applying effective direct pressure.
Correctly using commercially available tourniquets on limbs (self-application and aiding others).
Basic wound packing techniques for injuries where tourniquets cannot be used.
Basic Airway Positioning: Simple techniques to help keep an unconscious person's airway open (if safe to do so).
Protective Measures: Understanding the basics of moving victims to positions of greater safety (if feasible and appropriate).
Communication: Effectively communicating critical information to 911 operators and arriving first responders.
Course Format:
This course is heavily focused on hands-on practice. Participants will engage with skills stations and realistic (but non-intimidating) scenarios designed to reinforce learning and build confidence in applying these life-saving techniques under potential stress. Course content follows the current C-TECC guidelines for Civilian First Care Providers / Lay Responders.
Target Audience:
Teachers, Students (age appropriate), Office Workers, Event Staff, Community Leaders, Church Security Teams, Parents, Commuters, Hunters, Outdoor Enthusiasts, and any member of the public who wishes to be prepared to save a life during a traumatic emergency. No prior medical training is required.
Certification/Completion:
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a C-TECC recognized TECC course completion certificate, demonstrating their training in essential life-saving interventions for traumatic emergencies.
